All The Devils Are Here

A story by Sonny Lanning

How Do You Hide From A God?

For centuries, people believed to be possessed have spoken in strange tongues, their words dismissed as the ravings of madness or the voices of demons. Now a linguist has discovered something extraordinary. Across different cultures, separated by thousands of miles and hundreds of years, the possessed have been speaking fragments of the same unknown language.

For the first time, someone has managed to translate it. The message is not a threat or a declaration of power. It is a terrified plea: Don't let it see me. Words long treated as evidence of evil begin to suggest a story that the people recording them never thought to ask about, told by beings whose greatest concern is remaining hidden.

For someone desperately trying to save a loved one from a violent possession, the discovery offers a glimmer of hope. But the more they learn about the presence inside their loved one, the harder it becomes to believe that it is evil. Understanding its fear does not make the possession safe. It changes what saving the person might require.

The beings humanity has called demons are refugees. Some were once worshipped as gods, before an ancient conqueror destroyed their power, drove them into hiding and reshaped humanity's understanding of the divine. For thousands of years, the survivors have concealed themselves inside human beings. Now, through a language long forgotten by humanity, they may finally have a chance to speak.

But something is still hunting them. Their story challenges beliefs built over millennia, while one human life remains caught inside a struggle older than any of its witnesses. Saving that life may depend upon confronting the most powerful being humanity has ever worshipped—and deciding whether the voice asking for protection can be trusted before its pursuer hears it.
