I Believe You

A story by Sonny Lanning

You Can Tell The Truth And Still Be Wrong

Justice has acquired a powerful new tool. Neural verification can establish whether someone genuinely believes a statement to be true. It promises a way past deception, hesitation and the unreliable business of judging a speaker's manner. The distinction between sincere belief and objective fact is part of the technology's limits. Society, increasingly reassured by its results, has begun to stop hearing it.

Then Rachel Dacre gives two accounts of the same killing. They cannot both describe what happened. Yet each registers as sincerely believed. The result does more than complicate a case. It exposes the gap between what the machine measures and what people have allowed themselves to assume it proves. A system associated with certainty has produced an honest contradiction.

For investigator and suspect alike, the ordinary routes through uncertainty become difficult to use. Detecting a lie will not necessarily reveal the truth. Establishing sincerity will not settle the events. Memory and identity, normally treated as foundations beneath testimony, become part of what must be questioned. The case requires attention to possibilities that a reassuring result might once have encouraged everyone to ignore.

Rachel's incompatible accounts carry consequences beyond the room in which they are heard. If each can be sincerely held, then confidence is no reliable guide to accuracy. People may tell the truth as they understand it while giving a completely false account of what occurred. The investigation must find a way to respect that distinction without abandoning the possibility of knowing anything at all.

I Believe You is a speculative thriller about the authority we give to certainty and the machinery built to certify it. At its centre is a killing that cannot be explained by deciding who is honest. The difficult question comes afterwards: once you believe someone, how do you discover whether they are right?
