No Secrets

A story by Sonny Lanning

Imagine having perfect recall. Now imagine it isn't yours.

Human memory has become something that can be stored, searched and passed on. The past no longer has to vanish with the person who lived it. For Helena Rook, grieving her husband, the technology offers a promise that once belonged to wishful thinking: access to what he remembered, and perhaps a firmer understanding of the life they shared.

An archive can preserve intimacy. It can also expose how much of another person remains private even within a marriage. Helena must face memories that belong to her husband rather than to the story she has carried about them both. Knowing that an experience occurred does not determine what it meant to him, or what she should now be entitled to take from it.

Then a movement called Present Tense begins attacking the idea that anyone should own the past. Private archives are exposed. Recollections that were once contained within a single mind become material for public scrutiny, and intimate memories acquire the force of evidence. The technology's promise of certainty becomes entangled with a struggle over who can demand access and who still has the right to refuse.

For Helena, the conflict reaches directly into grief. What did her husband remember about her? What did he choose not to share while he could still make that choice? An answer may satisfy curiosity without bringing comfort. A preserved moment may reveal something true while stripping away the privacy in which it was lived. Perfect access does not promise a gentle reading.

No Secrets explores love and ownership in a world where forgetting is no longer inevitable. As Helena navigates the distance between an inherited archive and the man she lost, she must decide what understanding requires—and whether opening every part of a life destroys the last place its owner was allowed to be alone.
