Pressure
One of them is dead. Opening the door could kill the rest.
A saturation-diving team is sealed inside a pressurised chamber when one of its members dies. If the death was deliberate, the person responsible is still inside. There is no straightforward way to separate a suspect, leave a threatening room or bring in an investigator. Decompression will take days. Until then, the survivors must continue sharing the same enclosed space and the same air.
The chamber turns every familiar response to danger into a problem. Escape is physically hazardous. Outside help cannot simply cross the threshold. The team must rely on procedures, equipment and one another while the death changes how each of those necessities is understood. What was routine becomes something to examine. What once looked like friction between colleagues may acquire a more disturbing significance.
Under mounting physical and psychological strain, grievances, technical failures and ordinary actions begin to look like evidence. Yet suspicion does not establish what happened. The surviving divers must work out whether there is a murderer among them without abandoning the cooperation on which their own lives depend. Distrusting everyone may be no safer than trusting the wrong person.
Time inside the chamber is governed by more than the investigation. The body cannot be hurried back to normal pressure simply because remaining where it is has become unbearable. The divers face a period they must endure, measured against a threat they cannot confidently identify. Each decision about safety is made in the presence of people who may know more about the death than they are saying.
Pressure is a contained murder thriller in which the locked room is also a life-support system. The team need the truth, but they need to survive long enough to use it. Until the chamber can be opened safely, the person they most fear may also be someone they cannot afford to stop relying on.
