Saints of Blackwater

A story by Sonny Lanning

The Lord Works In Mysterious Ways.

Blackwater has built part of its identity around Father Matthew Cavanagh and the extraordinary outcomes associated with his memory. For historian Nell Calder, the town's reputation is something to examine carefully. Recoveries, accidents survived and stories of apparent miracles belong in a record before they can belong in an explanation. She arrives to investigate a history that matters deeply to the people living inside it.

Across the water lies Greyhaven, a place whose history has followed a very different course. A village, a sanatorium and a prison seem to belong to other kinds of records, other categories of local knowledge. As Nell compares the chronologies, however, periods of Blackwater's remarkable good fortune begin to align with changes across the Reach. Coincidence remains possible. Ignoring the pattern becomes more difficult.

Working through the evidence means resisting an explanation simply because it makes a compelling story. Nell must ask what can actually be established, while recognising how much the town has invested in what it already believes. Faith has shaped Blackwater, but so have livelihoods, civic pride and the ordinary wish for a community to survive. A reputation can support lives as well as convictions.

As the town faces a decision about its future, the distance between belief and responsibility begins to narrow. Questions once confined to an archive reach into the present, where choices have consequences for people on both sides of the water. Understanding a pattern may demand more than acknowledging that it exists. It may require deciding whether its benefits can still be accepted.

Saints of Blackwater is a supernatural story about faith, evidence and the moral cost of a community's good fortune. As the water rises, the town must live with what it has chosen—and with what it has chosen to believe about the people whose lives make that choice possible.
