Staying Human

A story by Sonny Lanning

The future moved on. They didn’t.

Progress promises a better future. For Micah Vale, the difficulty is that a better future does not mean the same thing to everyone. As humanity changes, he chooses to remain human. It is a decision about his own existence, but its consequences reach into a world increasingly organised around people who have chosen differently. Staying becomes an active commitment while everything around him continues to move.

At first, the distinction can be expressed as a choice. Over time, it becomes part of ordinary life. The distance between those who have embraced the future and those who remain alters what can be assumed about care, belonging and independence. Needs that once seemed familiar begin to belong to a way of living the wider world is leaving behind.

Micah must navigate that distance without surrendering the meaning of his decision. Wanting to remain human does not remove the need for help, connection or a place among others. Nor does accepting support settle who should have authority over the terms on which it is given. A life can be valued and still be managed according to somebody else's idea of what is best for it.

As the gap widens, the questions become harder to keep private. Who defines a worthwhile human life when the people doing the defining have moved beyond its familiar limits? What does respect for a choice require once that choice becomes inconvenient? And how can someone belong to a future that increasingly treats the thing he wishes to preserve as a problem already solved?

Staying Human follows the consequences of remaining when change has become the expected direction of travel. Through Micah's struggle for care, connection and self-determination, it asks whether progress can make room for people who do not want the life it offers—and whether choosing differently still means choosing freely when the world around that choice is disappearing.
