There Were Three In The Bed

A story by Sonny Lanning

Who Will Be The Little One?

Three men. One house. A job that should make them rich. They have broken into wealthy homes before, and they understand the work: intimidate the people inside, control the situation and leave with what they came for. Their experience has taught them to expect fear from others. This time, the house has been waiting for them.

Inside a private vault filled with watches, jewellery and other valuables, the door locks. One of the men dies. Nobody entered. Nobody attacked him. The other two cannot get out. The room that promised a fortune becomes the limit of their world, containing a dead partner and no clear explanation of what has just happened. Then a children's nursery rhyme begins to play.

Someone is watching. Someone knows them, perhaps better than they know one another. As the hours pass, secrets from their violent past begin to surface. A partnership built on intimidation and loyalty starts to come apart under the pressure of fear. The qualities that made them effective together now make each survivor painfully aware of what the other is capable of doing.

They know they have been lured into a trap. What they cannot agree on is why, who is responsible or which of them is supposed to survive it. Every interpretation changes the danger inside the room. Depending on the answer, a partner may be an ally, an obstacle or the next threat. The person outside does not have to enter to influence what happens between them.

Three In The Bed is a confined thriller about violent men stripped of the control on which their confidence depends. Wealth surrounds them, but none of it offers a way out. Whoever has arranged the room may understand their instincts well enough to let the trap finish itself—because the greatest remaining danger could be the two people still alive inside it.
